By focusing on housing, economic development and revitalization, in Hartford’s Northend, we’re working to create an environment where businesses succeed, families thrive, and opportunities are within reach for all. Here are some of the very impactful programs we offer.
Commercial Storefront/Facade Renovation Program
The Storefront Renovation and Facade Program is an initiative that revitalizes existing and vacant commercial spaces and facilitates the establishment of new businesses. The goal is to improve the physical and functionality of storefronts and attract more foot traffic, support business recovery (particularly as it relates to the Covid-19 Pandemic) and encourage new investment. Approved applicants may receive up to $50,000 in grant assistance.
The Senior Homeowner Deferred Maintenance Program
Homeownership is a critical component to fostering healthy communities. Many of our community’s senior homeowners are struggling to maintain the condition of their homes. The program provides a grant of up to $20,000 to owner-occupants of 1-3 residential homes for the completion of a variety of repairs and improvements related to health/safety conditions, deferred maintenance, and apparent code violations. Eligible repairs include handicapped accessible ramps, siding, stairs, porches and deck repairs, roof replacement, gutters, chimneys repairs, hand railings, walkway, windows, driveway, smoke detectors, and security systems. The program will ensure that our seniors can age in place with dignity and retain the opportunity to pass on generational wealth and assets.
Down Payment Assistance Program
A major obstacle to homeownership is the difficulty experienced by an individual or family trying to secure a downpayment. BHCA will offer up to $25,000 in grant assistance to eligible applicants seeking to purchase a home in North Hartford. With the cost of homes increasing, BHCA, along with other housing advocates and partners, is being proactive in helping prospective homebuyers achieve sustainable affordability by driving down the amount of the mortgage loan and in some cases, eliminating private mortgage insurance costs.
Senior Services Program

The Senior Support Services Program is a community-based initiative designed to assist senior homeowners in the upkeep of their properties while simultaneously fostering youth employment. This program provides essential outdoor services for seniors in the Blue Hills and other northend neighborhoods, ensuring their yards well-kept throughout the year.

Small Business Micro Grant Program
Small businesses, particularly in urban communities have faced widespread challenges due to the pandemic, including periods of shutdown, declines in revenue, or increased costs. Pre- and post-existing disparities like lack of access to capital compounded and continues to compound the pandemic’s effects. This program provides financial assistance to impacted and disproportionately impacted small businesses. Up to $7,500 in grant assistance may be used for expenses like payroll, rent, utilities, inventory, supplies, equipment purchases, etc. Two thirds of all employment is made possible by small businesses and BHCA is committed to helping to ensure their success.
